Summer 2016

From Page to Stage

Is the extraordinary theatrical power of Shakespeare’s plays due to their themes, their ability to trigger an imaginative response in actors and spectators, their use of words and silences, their evocative strength?

Besides, how do theatre practitioners proceed to extract from the page the elements which will work on stage? We will try to decipher how the “theatrical act” is in itself written in the text and subtext and what it requires from theatre practitioners to make it happen. Does Shakespeare anticipate the actors’ needs in his writing? What is the effect on the actors and audiences of the constant meta-theatrical reflection in the plays?

With all this in mind, our programme covers the transformation of the plays from texts to scripts as they move from the page to the stage.
